Seasonal fishing guide
Summer fishing around Hilton Head: what to expect
A look at how the summer season tends to fish in the Lowcountry, and how we approach it aboard Southern Hook.
A general seasonal guide. This is an overview of how this time of year tends to fish around Hilton Head, not a dated report of specific catches, and nothing here is a guarantee. Conditions change constantly.
Summer is peak season in the Lowcountry, and there is usually a lot going on. As the water warms, the fishing gets fast and varied, which makes it a great time to be on the boat whether you are chasing your first fish or your personal best.
What tends to be around
Depending on the season and conditions, summer waters around Hilton Head can hold a mix worth planning a trip around. Shark fishing is often at its most exciting in the warmer months, which is a big hit with kids and groups. Tarpon can show in the sounds and along the beaches for anglers who want a shot at a giant. Out on the reefs and ledges, bottom fishing and wreck fishing can produce steady action.
How we fish it
On a summer trip we let the conditions and your goals set the plan. A calmer morning might mean a comfortable nearshore run, while a settled day opens the door to a longer offshore trip. Early starts are often worth it in the heat, and the Regulator's shade earns its keep in the afternoon.
Planning tips
- Book a little ahead, since summer is the busy season.
- Bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat, plus food and drinks for the trip.
- Consider a longer trip if offshore is on your wish list.
- Not sure what to target? Tell Ian and he will build the day around it.
Fishing is seasonal and conditions change day to day, so treat this as a guide rather than a promise. The best way to know what is biting is to ask Ian when you plan your trip.
